OAT Games - Road to Rio 2016

Last Monday (11th July 2016) was the inaugural OAT School Games – Road to Rio. We took over 90 pupils from year 7-10 to compete in a range of events, including:
futsal, touch rugby, wheelchair basketball, handball, netball and athletics.

After the 2 hour journey to Stoke-on-Trent we arrived and met the 6 other Ormiston academies who also took part in the games. Each academy represented a country and began the games with a dance off; our nation was Spain.

Well done to the girls who took part in the dance-off!

Oli Yarnold, winner of the English sports day oath competition, read out his oath in front of all the 700 competitors and was selected to carry the Olympic torch around the track. His oath read:

Picture: Oli Yarnold

‘On behalf of all the competitors here today, I promise to respect and not discriminate against the other participants in a race. It’s not all about winning it’s the taking part that counts. No matter your ability try your best. We will have sportsmanship and congratulate the winners and losers’

During the day our pupils competed in a number of sporting activities and did exceptionally well in a lot of the events. We were victorious in many events, including: the girl’s athletics and netball, the boy’s handball and even the tug-of-war.

The scores were added up and we missed out on 1st place by 1 point!!

Well done to the event organisers, the Ormiston Academies, the young leaders and the competitors.

A great day had by all! We'll look forward to the next event.

Year 10 Netball tournament

The girls took part in the Herefordshire Y10 county tournament yesterday at the John Kyrle high school in Ross on Wye.

After a tough game and loss (12-2) against Hereford Cathedral School we managed to qualify for the quarter finals as runners up after beating Whitecross 14-1 and Aylestone 11-1.

Our quarter final game was against Lucton, who we beat 6-2. We were through to the semi final.

We were up against Hereford Cathedral School in the semi finals. After losing against them in the preliminaries, we knew it would be an extremely tough game.

After 12 minutes of play, we had held them to a draw 1-1 but played on for golden goal. After 4 minutes of extra time, and lots of missed opportunities from both teams, Tenbury scored!

We were through to the final against Wigmore! Cold weather, fatigue and injuries started to creep in and Kaitlin Leadbetter came off court with an injury. Still, we were winning 1-0 for the majority of the game. Unfortunately, despite excellent play, the final score was 2-1 to Wigmore.

Huge thank you to Miss Walker for the time she has put in to coaching the girls on a Tuesday lunchtime. They have made fantastic progress and played the best netball they have ever played. We are very proud!

Miss Cartwright

2015 Netball update

It’s been a great season of netball so far at THOA. This half term alone there have been approximately 15 netball matches (including one for the Tenbury teachers vs Lacon Childe teachers) AND two tournaments!

Yr 7 & 8 played Lady Hawkins on the 15th January and Bishops Bluecoats on the 22nd January. The Y8 netball team haven’t lost a game so far this season! Y7, although they lost, played their best netball so far this year.

Unfortunately on the 20th January, as the U16, U15, U13 & U12 were about to leave for Lacon Childe a snow blizzard stopped travel and play! Matches to be re-arranged.

Y8 & Y10 played two fantastic matches against QE Bromyard on the 29th January – two more successes.

Lacon Childe visited us at THOA on the 4th February to play a U14 & U13 matches and once again the Y8 and 9 teams kept a clean sheet! Excellent!

When Lucton visited us with their U14, 15 & 16 teams on the 4th February we came away with a win for the U14 & 16 and a near miss for the U15 team.

On the 10th February the Y7 team played their first county netball tournament at Hereford Academy but unfortunately lost in two very close netball matches against John Kyrle (1-1 draw) and Hereford Academy (2-1 loss).

On the 11th February the Y8 team played in the Herefordshire School Games. This was held at The Point 4 in Hereford – an excellent indoor venue. The Y8 team won their two first two matches against Earl Mortimer (9-2) and Lady Hawkins (4-2) but were unfortunate to miss out and lose to St Mary’s (1-5). Well done for coming second in your pool! Excellent work!

Well done to all THOA netball players!
Next half term we look forward to a busy end to the season.

Miss Cartwright.
