Girls' rugby opportunities

 A 'pitch Up and Play' event is happening at Greyhound RFC on Sunday 20^th March, 1:30pm start. This is an informal-styled event where players can literally, just ‘pitch up to play’

We’ll also be doing our best to cater for all formats of the game so if a player likes the thought of rugby but not necessarily the contact side, we will be running some touch rugby games (non-contact). For those that have enjoyed tackling, we will obviously be able to coach this aspect of the game too. There will also be an introductory session for those that have never tried contact but would like to give it a go!

Year 10 Rugby

Congratulations to our year 10 rugby team for reaching the final of the plate competition. The game was played at Luctonians Rugby Club on Monday 16th Nov 2015.

The team have played exceptionally well over the past few weeks, playing in some very close and entertaining games. 

Our opponents in the final was Queen Elizabeth and  as soon as the whistle went we began the game on top. For the first 15 minutes THOA kept possession inside QE's half and really tested their defence. The forwards were dominating the rucks and there was some lovely link up play through the backs.
Tenbury were rewarded for their pressure and scored the first try when Dom Wiset made a lovely run through their defence.

QE responded well and started to win the scrums which proved to be a vital part of their fightback. They scored 2 tries before the half and finished the half 5-12 up.

Tenbury continued to play well in the second half but found it very difficult against a very fast QE team. QE added another 4 tries to the score before the end.

Tenbury finished the game brightly and were close to scoring when Oliver Wallace was tackled 2 metres from the try line.

Overall, our team have played really well and have started to play as a team. Their aim is to carry the positives into next year as we look to have a really strong year 11 team.

Tenbury’s year 7 rugby team competed in the plate competition at BRC against: Bishops D, Fairfield B and Aylestone.

Congratulations to Kit Garbutt and William Powis who were selected to play in the President’s XV vs Bishop's Hereford on Wednesday 23^rd September.

The final score was 57-10 to the President's XV.

Kingspan Funding

Tenbury High Ormiston Academy Sporting Enrichment Activities supported by the Kingspan Insualtion Community Trust

Pupils at Tenbury High Ormiston Academy and the former Tenbury High School have been receiving support from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust for the last three years.

Since 2006 the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust has been involved in making contributions to the local community on a formal and inclusive footing. The Kingspan Insulation Community Trust has grown out of this desire, and makes it possible for local people to plan and carry out projects that will directly benefit their community and enhance the environment. 

As a school we have received funding that meets the trusts objective which aims to ‘’improve the health and fitness of young people through recreation.’

In a joint venture between local high schools and Luctonians RFC, pupils benefitted from 50 hours of professional rugby coaching providing boys and girls with an ‘introduction to ‘contact’ in an imaginative and enthusiastic way as well as supporting the boys and girls to enter competitive rugby in a safe and enjoyable way.

The coaching enabled our pupils to play to success winning the Year 7 Herefordshire Plate competition and win through to the Worcestershire Games Touch Rugby Finals. 

Adrian Taylor, Head of PE at Tenbury High commented “The work Trevor undertook with the Year 9 boys has had a significant impact on the team.  With Trevor able to work with the more able team members, the school staff could work more effectively with the less able players, as a result some of these players were selected to play for the School. 
Pupils at the school also benefitted from the use of the Astroturf pitch at Leominster following funding received from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust. The funding enabled the girl’s hockey team to run regular practice sessions on the Astroturf pitch which in turn allowed them the opportunity to work effectively as a team and in a full side situation. The sessions were run as an after school activity for 1 hour per week between September and February last year. There were 12 regular players from Tenbury and to enable more players to participate Lady Hawkins School joined with our girls and they provided a qualified coach to lead the sessions.

John Garbutt Chairman of the Trust added “It has been great to see so many pupils in a number of schools being able to develop and now use advanced skills in the game. Not only has this training helped improve their health and fitness but it’s also given them the opportunity to work together and form strong bonds as teams.

The icing on the cake for the school has been the purchasing of a full set of Indoor Athletics equipment in June 2014. This offers innovative and exciting activities developing speed, agility and co-ordination. The equipment has transformed the winter sports programme for our pupils as participants and leaders and it has also enabled over twenty local primary schools to join us for coaching and competitions. In the event of poor weather in lessons the pupils will always ask us to get out the Indoor Athletics equipment!


“We are extremely grateful to the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust for this funding as it has enabled the academy to develop and range of competitive sports including coaching, competitive games, primary school festivals and sports leadership opportunities. The equipment and coaching provided has certainly raised the profile of the sport throughout the school.” 

Year 7 Rugby Tournament

The years 7s experienced their first competitive rugby tournament yesterday at Luctonians Rugby Club.

Tenbury competed in pool 3 and played teams from: Bishops, Whitecross, Aylestone and Hereford Academy.

The team played exceptionally well and managed to win 3 out of the 4 games; drawing against the Academy.

After finishing joint 1^st in our pool we then went on to play Lucton in the pool 3 & 4 final. The game was evenly contested with Lucton scoring a try inside 5 minutes. We responded  with a brilliant try from Rhys Macintosh and the game looked like it was destined to be a draw. That was until Alex Cridland picked up the ball, following some good work from the backs and went on to score the match winning try.

Overall try scorers included: Ollie x2, Rhys x4, Ben P x1, Harrison x1, Logan x1, Adam x1, Alex x1

Touch Rugby Tournament

THS held a mixed, touch rugby competition for Year 9 today (24/03/2014 ). Including the Tenbury team, teams from the Chantry and the Chase also took part, creating a competition of 4 teams.

This was a great opportunity for the year 9 girls, who have been taking part in our girls rugby practice after school on a weekly basis. Although our team came 4th it was nice to see all pupils, having fun and working together against other schools.

Regarding the KS4 tournament, THS have been automatically selected to play in the Worcestershire Summer School Games, held on the 24th June.

Year 7 Rugby Tournament @ Hereford Rugby Club

The following tournament report was kindly written by Max Gunther from Year 7:-

On 29^th November 2013, the year 7 rugby team entered a tournament in Hereford. The first match of the day was against Bromyard. Theo Houchin (scrum-half) tapped the ball to begin the game, which was 10 minutes long. He passed it into the path of Toby Whitney (No. 8), who continued at full speed. However, Tenbury only gained a few metres, until the frenzied rucking of Bromyard overcame the forwards. Having tackled Luke Robson (prop), the Bromyard backs broke through Tenbury’s defence with their sheer pace to score the first try of the match. From the restart, the ball come to Matty O’hagan (outside centre), after a brilliant pass from Luke Bufton (left wing). After the Bromyard tackle, the backs were in disarray and Bromyard charged through the middle to score their second try. During Bromyard’s next two tries, poor rucking after Dylan Turrell’s (prop), and Ben Hackney’s (second row) rackles, made sure that Tenbury were completely outclassed. With one more minute remaining, Tenbury’s best combination so far,Zac Francis (right wing) scrambled the ball across the line. Final score was 4 tries to 1.

The second match of the tournament was against Bishops D. The strong forwards repeatedly gained ground, forcing Tenbury deep. Even the substitutes, among them William Slater (left wing), could not prevent Bishops’ first two tries. After the restart, Tenbury gained some ground, but a forward pass and their tough forwards ended the attack. Slightly unfocussed, the backs allowed Bishops to score their third try. Again at the restart, Toby Whitney charged forward, leading Tenbury. A series of excellent phases allowed the team to progress. The final blow came from the captain: Toby Whitney, who smashed through their defence. The final score was 3 tries to 1.

After these two defeats, Tenbury pulled themselves together for the final group game. St Marys had a lot of powerful players, but they weren’t too fast. At the beginning they simply had a greater desire to win. They kept on harrying the defence, until they finally managed to score a try. However, Tenbury were now really pushing. Some brilliant hooking from Dylan Turrell and great support from Callum Collins fired the team on. After a superb run and offload from Harry Morgan, Toby Whitney got the ball and scored his second try, to level the scores. Playing mainly through the centre, Tenbury was often repelled by the beefy forwards. After Daniel Coupland’s pass into space which Matty O’hagan ran onto, the team finally marshalled itself into something that resembled a straight line and scored again. This time Ben Hackney! The final score was 2 tries to 1.

Having come third in the group of four, Tenbury continued on to the plate, not the cup. The next game was against Whitecross, in the semi-final of the plate. The match started quickly, with many rucks and counter attacks. Tenbury played some great rugby with quick offloads from the rucks. Then there was a blow against the hard work because Whitecross scored against the tide of the game. Tenbury hadn’t tackled hard enough. Now Whitecross were missing more tackles and Tenbury equalised with a clear, undisputed try by Ben Hackney. Whitecross came extremely close to scoring, but a tackle just before the try line and a double manoeuvre saved Tenbury. It was a Whitecross scrum. Immediately, it seemed as if Whitecross would keep possession but Dylan Turell managed to hook the ball back towards Theo Houchin. He played the ball to Finley Houchin, who strated to run, with Max Gunther at his side. He got past three players, but the fourth stopped his progress, so he passed to Max Gunther, centimetres from the try-line, he scored. Final score 2 tries to 1.

Tenbury were in the plate final. After waiting for the other semi-final to finish, the game finally began. It was very even. Both sides tackled well and kept the ball for long times. Matty O’hagan and Zac Francis had some great runs, although they led to nothing because of the lack of support. Both teams were steady and let no-one through. At last, the breakthrough came. Max Gunther was close to the try line when a massive maul ensued. He fell to the floor and rolled the ball back to Theo Houchin. The ball went to Daniel Coupland, who did a full turn and then passed to Matty O’hagan, who also did a full turn. The ball went on to Luke Bufton. The ball was touched down behind the try-line. The time on the stopwatch said 9:50. Tenbury had won the plate with ten seconds to spare.

Well done to all the Year 7 boys who attended their first rugby tournament on Monday 7th October @ Luctonians Rugby Club

We lost to Whitecross 10 - 15, St Mary's 5 - 15, Bishops c 0 - 10 and won against Fairfield 10 - 5.

 

The try scores were Daniel Coupland (x1), Ben Hackney (x3), Toby Whitney (x1) and Theo Houchin (x1)

 

Toby's try earned him his tea, from his Dad, which happened to be sausage and chips!
